| Anyone have a lead on what shade of blue they actually painted the helicopters used in the movie? |
I don't know the exact colour. I've heard it referred to as midnight blue which comes up in RGB hex colour code as 191970.
After examining a photo's pixels of a solid body section of Blue Thunder in sunlight with some parts of the fuselage out of the sun, I found the following RGB hex codes:
384C69 333F66 404D69 2F3D54 32424F 3B496A 40517B
Hope that helps.

I think you're right with the midnight blue numbers. The rest seem to be either a bit purple or a bit grey. The scene that gives me the clearest idea is when Murphy sneaks into the hanger to listen to Lymangood's message. That shade of blue would seem to be the most accurate, to me. Thanks . |
Over 5 months later, I stumbled onto an answer. It may be a tiny bit off, but I think it works.
There's a decal set for one of the model kits that was re-released a while back, and it had both names and Federal Standard paint codes for thing like the upper fuselage, lower fuselage, cockpit, rotor blades, etc...
Here's what I found:
Upper fuselage - Flat Dark Blue - FS35044 (although, 350445 works just as well) Lower fuselage - Flat Black - Draw your own conclusion, since there wasn't a listing for that on the Fed. Std. website I found.
Just thought I'd post this for a laugh or two.
Catch ya later! |
The pics in the Mason gallery offer the best insight into the colour to date -
The decal set is also fantastic - streets ahead of anything supplied with either Monogram or Kitech kit. Also has the prototype 01 thrown in just for fun. I'm using it to accurize my Organic Die-Cast - a huge project which I'll be showing off the results with soon... |
